Class 370

150 mile/h 25kV AC APT-Prototype

Built by BREL at Derby, the prototype Advanced Passenger Trains were divided between Glasgow Shields Electric Traction Depot and Crewe ETD. There were six rakes and spare driving second & brake first vehicles, numbered 370001 - 370007. Each rake would contain up to six articulated trailer vehicles and one non-driving motor vehicle, so that each train set would comprise of two such rakes with the motor vehicles being situated in the centre of the formation.

The two central power cars produced a total output of 8,000 horsepower (6,000 kW). This enabled the train to set the UK rail speed record of 162.2 mile/h (261.0 km/h) in December 1979 a record that stood for 23 years.
